HKU University of the Arts Utrecht

HKU distinguishes itself with higher education in the arts and media. We are a driving force in courses and innovation for the creative industries, and one of the largest art universities in Europe.

HKU has nine schools with a total of 4400 students: Fine Art, Design, Music and Technology, Games and Interaction, Art and Economy, Media, Utrechts Conservatorium, Theatre and HKU College.

Research
Art offers solutions to the issues facing society. It provides a different perspective on developments within culture, politics, economics, education and science. Art sets things in motion and gets results, which is why research into art is essential.

The HKU units that carry out research – the professorships, expertise centres, lecturer-researchers, students, doctoral candidates, Innovation Studio, etc. – are all interconnected. This approach promotes innovation, experimentation and research that transcends disciplines, thereby leading to more collaborative projects and programmes.

Professorships
The HKU professorships are thematic research groups that conduct research into arts practice and the creative professional field. In research projects and consortia, researchers often collaborate with other sectors where there is a need for a different perspective or for contributions from HKU based on the university’s own methods from the art and creative sector.
